Mobile number portability (MNP) in India is the procedure of transferring (porting) your mobile phone num from one Indian mobile phone network provider to another. The latest news on mobile number portability in India (13 July 2010) is that it will be implemented on October 31 2010... After a third postponement. This is because only 14% of the mobile phone network is ready for mobile number portability (MNP)... BSNL and MTNL are yet to set up the technology required to port indian mobile phone numbers. Thus, the start date for MNP implementation in India of 31 July 2010 was postponed... Again!
It is not posible to set up MNP (mobile number portability) in India until all mobile phone operators have implemented and tested the MNP technology... The Department of Telecom in India have issued warnings to all mobile phone operators instructing them to speed up the implementation of MNP otherwise they will be forced to take action against them. They have now released a new date for mobile number portability in India which is 31 October 2010.
BSNL assured the Department of Telecom that it will set up the MNP technology by July 18 2010, eighteen days AFTER MNP was supposed to be implemented in India (after several postponements). MNTL on the other hand have not even ordered the technology and it will likely be at least 4 months before they are even ready... And will not start testing the technology until October 2010...
Under guidelines proposed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), mobile users will be allowed to use the same mobile number even if providers use different mobile technologies like CDMA (code division multiple access) or GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). GSM is currently the dominant technology used by providers in India.
Mobile number porting is not yet available in India due to some technical delays. The latest date for MNP in India is 31 October 2010. Mobile number portability allows you to transfer your mobile phone number from your current provider to a new mobile phone operator. Big savings can be made if you are able to get a better mobile phone tariff from a new provider...
