Rs 740crore for railway overbridges in Tamil Nadu

Silencing critics who were blaming the ruling AIADMK for going slow on infrastructure projects, chief minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday sanctioned Rs 740 crore for constructing several railway overbridges and underpasses across the state. According to a government release, the chief minister gave administrative sanction for constructing 23 bridges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Villupuram and Coimbatore districts. Referring to steps taken to convert the arterial ECR into four lane to accommodate the burgeoning vehicular density, the released pointed out that of the total sum, Rs 134 crore has been sanctioned for Palar bridge on East Coast Road, including `66.63 crore allotted for constructing a new two-lane bridge there.

Similar railway overbridges would be constructed near Ottivakkam railway station at Chengalpet, between Padalam and Karunguli railway stations, and Achirapakkam railway station. Over Rs 45 crore has been sanctioned for bridges in Salem district too. The new bridges would not only reduce the journey time of passengers who have to wait at railway crossings but also reduce accidents and fuel consumption.

Stating that roads were not meant for just connecting places but to bring about an overall development, the release added that road transport would be smoothened through various concerted efforts being made by the state highway department.
