CHENNAI: In a judicial ruling with massive consequences for Tamil Nadu, the Madras high court on Tuesday set aside the state's civic poll notification.
Passing orders on a batch of petitions including those filed by DMK, a single judge of the court set aside the notification on several grounds and directed the state election commission to issue a fresh notification and complete the poll process by December this year.
As per the original notification, elections were to be held in two phases - - on October 17 and October 19. Filing of nomination ended on Monday.
The judge passed a hard-hitting order referring to media reports on election-related violence and murders at several places in the state and said the panel should strive to hold fair ejections with persons not having criminal background.
